About Unit Price Comparison Calculator

Larger packages often cost more per unit despite appearing cheaper—or sometimes the opposite. Unit price comparison reveals true value across different package sizes, helping you make informed purchasing decisions.

Comparison Method

  • Price Per Unit: Cost divided by quantity for standard items
  • Price Per Ounce/Gram: Cost divided by weight for packaged goods
  • Price Per Liter/Gallon: Cost divided by volume for liquids
  • Best Value Highlight: Automatic identification of lowest unit price

When Bigger Isn't Better

Bulk sizes don't always save money. Marketing psychology leads consumers to assume larger means cheaper per unit. Some products have "sweet spot" sizes where unit price is lowest. Perishables may waste money if they expire before use. Our calculator removes guesswork from these decisions.

Shopping Strategy

Store unit prices (when displayed) may use different base measurements, making comparison difficult. Our calculator normalizes to your chosen unit. Compare across brands, stores, and package sizes to optimize your shopping budget on the items you buy regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is unit price and why does it matter?
Unit price is cost per standard measurement (per ounce, per pound, per 100ml, etc.). It's the true way to compare value between different sizes. A $3.00 10oz box vs $5.00 18oz box: $0.30/oz vs $0.28/oz - the larger size is actually cheaper per ounce despite higher total price.
How do I calculate price per ounce or unit?
Unit price = Total price ÷ Quantity or weight. $4.50 for 15oz = $0.30/oz. For items sold by count: $3.00 for 8 cookies = $0.375 per cookie. Our calculator handles weight, volume, and count units and converts between measurement systems.
Is bulk buying always cheaper per unit?
Usually, but not always! Compare unit prices carefully. Sometimes regular sizes are on better sales, or bulk items expire before use (wasted money). Warehouse stores aren't automatically cheaper. Our calculator compares multiple package sizes side-by-side to show actual best value.
How do I compare items with different units?
Convert to the same unit first. Comparing a 500ml bottle at $2.50 vs a 20oz bottle at $1.99: convert both to per-100ml or per-oz. 500ml = 16.9oz, so $2.50/16.9 = $0.148/oz vs $1.99/20 = $0.0995/oz - the 20oz is better value. Our calculator handles these conversions automatically.
Should I factor in coupons and sales?
Absolutely! Enter prices after discounts for accurate comparison. A $5.00 item with $1 off coupon becomes $4.00 for comparison. Sale prices can flip which size is the better value. Our calculator lets you enter actual prices paid, including coupon and sale adjustments.
How do multi-buy deals affect unit price?
"Buy 2, Get 1 Free" on $3 items means $6 for 3 = $2/each. "Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off" on $4 items = $6 for 2 = $3/each. These deals can make smaller packages cheaper than bulk. Our calculator evaluates multi-buy scenarios and compares against regular pricing.
